Different Types of Strollers

Before you select what kind of stroller you want, you need to know what types are available. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you can expect to see.

Full-Size Single Stroller

Full-size, or traditional strollers, are all-purpose buggies. These are usually the best investment.

They are generally compatible with infant car seats using the right adapters. They’ll grow with your child well into toddlerhood — some can carry a child up to 75 pounds.

  • Best long-term investment.
  • Most allow for infant car seats.
  • Fully reclining seats.
  • Durable frames, which can carry an older child.

  • Usually quite heavy.
  • Not all can safely accommodate newborn infants.

Double Side-By-Side Strollers

Double side-by-side strollers are for families with two small children. These are generally similar to full-size buggies, offering the same sturdy frame and features. You can easily use them for two children of varying ages — just ensure you balance out the weight.

Side-by-side double strollers are perfect for active families who like to spend time outdoors. However, they’re not great if you need a stroller to go shopping. These are wide, and fitting through aisles or doors can be challenging.

  • Sturdy frame.
  • Lots of additional features much like the full-size type.
  • Excellent for outdoorsy parents.

  • Some can become unstable if two children of varying sizes sit next to each other.
  • Wide frame — awkward to fit through doors and aisles.

Double Tandem Strollers

Double tandem strollers also allow you to transport two small children. However, instead of sitting side-by-side, one seat is behind the other. These are great if you need a stroller for running errands like going to the grocery store.

Tandem strollers can be cumbersome to steer, though. They’re quite long, so walking in crowded areas can be challenging.

  • As narrow as single strollers.
  • You can transport two different aged babies without compromising balance.
  • Some are convertibles.

  • Can be cumbersome to steer.

Lightweight Umbrella Strollers

Lightweight umbrella strollers are ideal for parents on the go, who need a compact, easy-to-fold buggy. What classifies it as a lightweight umbrella stroller is its weight and the way it folds. These buggies fold similarly to umbrellas, hence the name — this allows them to fit into tight spaces when stored.

With this type, you’re compromising features like fully reclining seats, all-terrain wheels, and sometimes even sun canopies. Most can’t support babies under 6 months, and rarely will you find one that’s car seat compatible.

  • Lightweight, excellent for transporting.
  • Easy-to-fold and store.
  • Most are airplane-friendly.

  • Not for babies under 6 months.

Jogging Strollers

Jogging strollers are for the active parents who need a buggy they can exercise with. They typically come with three wheels, where the front is fixed for stability.

The best jogging strollers have all-terrain wheels and good suspension. Some can also be used as an everyday buggy for errands. You may even find one that’s infant car seat compatible.

However, they’re significantly heavier than others. And unless you find a multi-purpose one, they’re strictly for being out on the track or trail.

Watch Out

Although a jogging stroller is compatible with an infant car seat, never jog with an infant, unless the manufacturer states otherwise. A newborn has poor head control because of weak neck muscles and undeveloped motor skills. Most sources say a baby shouldn’t go fast in a stroller until they have mastered head control (1).

  • Excellent for active parents.
  • Sturdy and stable frames.
  • All-terrain wheels with superb suspension.
  • Some allow for infant car seats.

  • Significantly heavier than other buggies.
  • Some are bulky to store.

Travel Systems

Travel systems are all-in-one packages, ideal for expecting parents who often travel by car. With a travel system, you’ll get a stroller, infant car seat, and base for the vehicle. It enables you to place your baby in the car seat, and effortlessly switch from the car to stroller.

We recommend choosing a known brand to ensure the car seat exceeds safety standards.

Remove Sleeping Baby

Never let your baby sleep in the car seat while not in the vehicle. Once you’re back home, remove them from the seat and lay your baby in their crib. If left in the car seat, they could suffocate.

  • Everything you need is included.
  • You can use the stroller for a long time.
  • Ideal for new parents.

How to Choose the Best Stroller

Consider Your Needs

Where will you use the stroller? Do you need one for walking city streets, running errands, or do you want one to support an active lifestyle? Consider the types above and see which is most suitable for your needs.

If you’re often commuting to and from work, umbrella strollers or travel systems are great. If you use the buggy for going on weekend hikes or trips to the park, you will do better with a full-size.

Age of Baby

Shopping for a stroller for your newborn has different requirements than buying for a baby aged 6 months and up. Infants require a completely flat seat offering head support, or an infant car seat (2). Older babies, however, can use almost any buggy as long as it includes the right safety features.

For newborns, buggies allowing for a bassinet attachment are perfect. Your little one can rest soundly in a flat position.

Ease of Use

Having a stroller that’s complicated to fold and unfold, push, and park isn’t ideal. If you buy online, check user reviews and look for one which is easy to assemble and a breeze to fold. One-hand folding is best, especially if you’re often traveling alone with your baby.

Strollers you can use from infancy through toddlerhood are generally pricier, but they’ll save you long-term. Adjustable buggies are great for families working on a budget or planning for baby number two.

Some full-size units, and almost all jogging strollers, are considerably heavy. If you’ll need to carry or lift the buggy often, think of the weight. Lifting a bulky stroller with a baby on your other arm will wear on you over time.

Safety Harness

Harnesses or seatbelts are essential safety components in any stroller. They’ll prevent your baby from slipping or falling out should the buggy tip.

A five-point harness, which secures your baby over the shoulders, around the midsection, and between the legs, is best. Even newborns should have such a harness in a car seat.

Sun Canopy

Whether you live in sunny Miami or rainy Alabama, a sun canopy will help protect your little one. Sun can quickly burn a baby’s skin while out for a stroll — a canopy will provide some much-needed shade. When it’s raining, you can throw a rain cover over it.

Canopies come in different sizes. We recommend looking for one that’s large enough to cover most of the seat.

Brakes are essential, even on buggies. Look for those that are easy to use — some brands label them as “flip-flop-friendly,” suggesting you can engage them with any footwear. Some jogging strollers include a bike-style handbrake.

Best Stroller Brands

BOB, or Beast of Burden as it was formerly called, is a brand focusing on producing strollers for outdoorsy parents. It started as a two-person business back in 1994, but is currently owned by Britax. All their buggies have three air-filled tires and bike-style suspension — some are exclusively for jogging.

Chicco traces its roots back to Italy, where it was founded in 1958. Throughout its history, the main focus has been on producing affordable, high-quality baby products. Chicco has created almost every type of stroller there is, but is famous for its travel systems.

Peg Perego

Another Italian company is Peg Perego, which was conceived back in 1949. The name is famous for its wholesome solutions for families with any budget. Like Chicco, Peg Perego has produced many types of strollers, but is most loved due to its full-size buggies.

Bugaboo is a Dutch company that was founded in 1994. It is now considered a high-end brand. It’s famous for its Bugaboo Frog, which appeared in the popular series Sex and the City back in 2001.

Bugaboo focuses most on traditional strollers with an emphasis on luxuries like high-quality materials and features.

Stokke hails from Norway. It’s most famous for its children’s furniture like the Tripp Trapp highchair. It’s a high-end brand, with a heftier price tag, but has quality and features to match.

Stokke is known for creating buggies with elevated seats, bringing the baby close to the parent.

Maclaren was founded in England in 1965 by a former aviation engineer. The company is famous for its lightweight umbrella strollers. The buggies feature high-quality materials and sturdy frames — some are even car seat compatible.

Evenflo has a long, evolving history. It started out by producing nipples for baby bottles in 1920 — it wasn’t until 1995 that it launched its first stroller. Evenflo is famous for producing wholesome buggies, most of which are sold as travel systems.

Britax started nearly 70 years ago and is a giant within the industry today. Although it has created some fantastic strollers, Britax is more renowned for its top-notch car seats.

The Best of the Best

If you want to remain mobile post-baby, a stroller is essential. With all the various types, it can get overwhelming when trying to find the right one for you.

When searching for the best strollers, consider your needs and where you’ll be taking it. Then look for one that’s easy to use, folds effortlessly, and has a reasonable weight. Ensure the buggy has a suitable safety harness, good brakes, and a large sun canopy.

After the selection process is done, you’ll have a blast using that stroller for some epic adventures and quiet strolls with your child.
