Baby & Toddler Clothes: Dressing for Comfort and Style

The 3 a.m. blowout is where most parents learn which sleeper they actually like. Snaps running the wrong way up the leg, a zipper that stops at the neck, a bodysuit you have to pull over a messy head: the design decides how bad that change goes.

Sizing is the part nobody warns you about. Babies skip whole sizes, brands run differently, and 24 months and 2T are not the same cut even though the numbers suggest they should be. A shoe size chart by age and a pants chart by height give you a starting point before you buy something your toddler wears twice. How many newborn outfits you actually need is usually fewer than the shower gifts suggest.

Season and stage drive the rest. Summer dressing is about layers you can strip off in a hot car, winter means a snowsuit that still works with a car seat harness, and mittens matter mostly for a newborn scratching their own face. First walking shoes want a flexible sole rather than a stiff one. Past the buying, there is folding, drawer organization, whether organic cotton is worth it to you, and what to do with the outgrown pile once selling it starts to look worthwhile.
