Bottles that won't sabotage breastfeeding?

You’ve been looking at baby bottles for longer than you’d like to admit, and you still haven’t come up with a winner yet that you’d like to use when your baby is born. You plan to breastfeed, but you know you’re going to want some bottles too, so your baby’s dad can participate in the feedings.

What you need is a baby bottle that doesn’t cause confusion between how your baby latches onto the breast and how he latches onto the bottle. The last thing you want to do is mess up your breastfeeding efforts. You might want to continue reading to learn more about the Munchkin Latch BPA-free baby bottle. Our Munchkin Latch review will help you decide if this product will work for you.

Product Overview

Product Image of the Munchkin® Latch™ Anti-Colic Baby Bottle with Ultra Flexible Breast-like...

This bottle earns a rating of 4.25 stars out of 5 stars on the Mom Loves Best scale because of its stellar performance and features.

This set includes:

  • Three 8-ounce bottles.
  • Three sealing discs.
  • Three nipples.
  • Three caps.

Pros

  • This bottle won the 2015 American Baby’s Best Award, being named as the best bottle selected by moms.
  • The nipple mimics how a real nipple moves, which should help babies maintain the correct latch.
  • It has an anti-colic valve to cut back on how much air your baby swallows.
  • Milk won’t leak from the nipple unless your baby is sucking.

Cons

  • It’s pretty expensive when you figure out how much you’re spending per bottle considering it’s plastic.
  • Some moms have had problems with these bottles leaking.

Key Features and Benefits

Ease of Use

  • These bottles are easy to hold:
They feel comfortable in your hand, so you won’t feel like your hand will be stuck in the feeding position forever when your baby gets done with his bottle.
  • Putting together these bottles is no sweat:
Sometimes putting together bottles with anti-colic features is enough to drive me crazy. There can be so many steps, and I feel like an idiot if I need blueprints showing me how to put a baby bottle together. Luckily with this bottle, there are not many steps at all. Anyone can figure out how to piece this thing together.

Build Quality

  • The nipple moves like the real thing:
The nipple is a slam dunk when it comes to how lifelike it is. It stretches and moves around with your baby’s mouth. Because it uses a motion similar to breastfeeding, your baby shouldn’t start refusing the breast because he’d rather have the bottle.
  • The milk won’t come out unless your baby applies pressure to the nipple:
This feature is critical to breastfeeding moms because if the bottle you use leaks milk into your baby’s mouth every time it’s tipped upside down because of gravity, he’ll become a lazy feeder. Why would he want to put forth the effort to find the correct latch and suck furiously on your breast when all he has to do is hold still and wait for a trickle of milk to come into his mouth even if he puts out no effort at all? Bottles that rely on gravity can sabotage your breastfeeding efforts. Bottles like these make him work for his milk.
  • Some moms reported that the nipple seems to collapse frequently while using it:
It’s always unpleasant to make a hungry baby stop his feeding for a few moments because the nipple of the bottle has collapsed. Sometimes babies lose interest altogether in that feeding session, wasting a couple of ounces of breast milk or formula.

Cost

  • There are cheaper bottles out there:
These aren’t the priciest bottles out there, but they are still expensive compared to some other brands. Because babies are so finicky, often refusing to take bottles of popular brands that other babies seem to love, I’d probably only buy one of these bottles to start with to see if my baby liked it before I made the financial commitment of buying a relatively expensive three pack.

Cleanliness

  • The anti-colic feature at the bottom of the bottle makes it harder to clean all the way:
I’m not a neat freak by any stretch of the imagination, and I’ve never spent much time fussing about whether I’ve removed every milk particle from my kids’ bottles. But that blue vent thing at the bottom of these bottles is awkward to clean, even with a baby bottle brush. I don’t think I would be comfortable with how clean these bottles got — and I would probably need to invest extra money into a baby bottle sterilizer.

How Does It Compare?

Comotomo Baby Bottle

Moms who are looking to make bottle feedings feel like the full breastfeeding experience might want to buy the Comotomo baby bottles. Made out of silicone, even the bottle base is squeezable like a real breast. Be warned though, Comotomo breastfeeding bottles are even pricier than the Munchkin bottles.

Dr. Brown’s Original Wide-Neck Bottles

If you’re looking for a bottle that is much more affordable than the Munchkin ones are, you can go with Dr. Brown’s Original wide-neck bottles.

Philips Avent Anti-Colic Bottles

Moms who love anti-colic features but who aren’t sold on the Munchkin bottles may want to check out Philips Avent bottles. They have an easy-to-use anti-colic feature.

NUK Elephants Baby Bottle

Moms who are looking for a baby bottle that has a fun design on it and doesn’t look like every other bottle on the market may appreciate the bold and colorful elephants on these bottles.

Why We Like These Bottles

Even though these bottles are fairly expensive and somewhat hard to clean, they are easy to assemble and keep the air bubbles out of your baby’s milk so he won’t have as much spit up or gas. They will help stop your baby from becoming a lazy feeder because he’ll have to actively suck to get milk.

For breastfeeding moms who want to switch between the breast and bottle without causing confusion, this is a good choice.
