Indoor Activities: Fun Without Leaving Home
It is raining, school is out, and the morning is going to be long unless someone produces an idea that does not involve a screen or a drive to the store.
Most of what works is already in the kitchen. Slime comes together without borax, and the usual complaints, too stiff, too sticky, not stretchy, are fixed by adjusting one ingredient rather than starting again. Playdough can skip cream of tartar. Sensory bins, magnet play, and games that burn energy in a hallway all scale to the age you are working with, which matters most for one year olds, who will mouth every piece and need an adult within arm’s reach.
Movement is the part that gets skipped indoors and shows up later as a child bouncing off the walls at bedtime. A yoga mat sized for a smaller body, with enough grip on a hard floor and enough length to still fit next year, turns ten minutes of stretching into something a kid will repeat. Between that and a long list of rainy day options, the useful skill is having three ideas ready before anyone announces they are bored.
