Why Should I Get a Teething Necklace?

Teething necklaces can offer a sanitary option to handheld teethers and that can be a time saver for moms (source).

What happens with a teething ring is this — you give your child the teething ring and he drops it on the floor within seconds. Then you need to wash it before you can give it back to him. It can become a never-ending game for your child — he drops it and expects you to keep picking it up.

The Benefits

That’s the beauty of a teething necklace. Because you wear it around your neck, your baby can’t drop it, and you won’t have to wonder how much bacteria he’s eating when he chews on it.

Plus, you’re never left scrambling wondering where your baby’s teether is. When you’re wearing it around your neck, it’s always easy to locate.

The Hazards of Letting a Baby Wear A Teething Necklace

There are two types of teething necklaces — the ones made for babies to wear and the ones made for moms to wear.

The Dangers

You should avoid using the ones that are made for babies to wear. They may look adorable, but you could be endangering your child’s life with them. They can cause strangulation or choking (source).

To minimize, but not eliminate, the risk of letting your child wear a teething necklace, you can:

  • Make sure you keep a close eye on your child every minute he is wearing the necklace.
  • Take off the necklace when your baby is sleeping (source).
  • Always check the cord of the necklace to make sure it isn’t fraying. You don’t want the cord breaking and your baby choking on the beads.

As a mom, I cringe every time I see a baby wearing a necklace — I just don’t think it’s a good idea. Some moms are very responsible and they never leave the room while their babies are wearing the necklaces, but to me, it isn’t worth the risk. I would rather have my baby be uncomfortable from teething pain than end up choking or suffocating.

Teething Necklaces for Moms to Wear Are a Better Alternative

The other kind of teething necklaces are made for mothers to wear while their babies chew on them. That removes the strangulation risk. You still need to be vigilant while your baby is gnawing on the necklace that’s around your neck for several reasons.

As someone who has watched in horror as my child dropped his teething ring on the floor at a hospital, I love the idea of teething necklaces for moms. Because I envisioned every super virus known to man being on that hospital floor, his teething ring went straight in the garbage after he dropped it. Had I been wearing a necklace, that would have never happened.

Here’s what you should consider before buying a teething necklace:

  • What the material is made out of: Teething necklaces can be made out of many materials, including amber, silicone, rubber, plastic and wood. Sometimes you can buy what you think is an amber necklace only to find out it’s fake, and that it’s actually glass or plastic (source).
  • If the material has been proven safe enough that you’re comfortable using it: Some teething necklaces are made of materials, like wood, that have been used in one way or another for centuries. If you’re going for a wooden necklace, make sure it is untreated or unfinished wood for added safety. Not all of the materials found in teething necklaces have been proven safe for babies so you really need to use your judgement when selecting a necklace (source).
  • If they are effective: Make sure the claims people make about teething necklaces and the materials they are made out of are founded in science. Amber beads, for instance, have not been proven to help babies anymore than any other type of material (source).
  • If there are alternative ways to soothe your baby’s sore gums: If you decide teething necklaces aren’t right for you and your baby, you can always find fabric for your baby to chew on, use ice for a short period of time on her gums, or give her pain relief medicine like Tylenol.

5. Barvinok Teething Necklace

Winter and fall is the perfect time of year to let your necklaces make a statement. You won’t have a lot of skin showing during these cooler months, which makes it a great time to draw attention with some eye-catching accessories. Look for an unusual texture or material for your teething necklace.
Teething Necklace Wood for Baby and Mom to Wear. HANDMADE with Wooden Gift Box....

This Barvinok teething necklace uses a mixture of wood beads and crocheted beads that manage to look sophisticated, upscale and interesting enough to carry your outfits through the humdrum of winter. The turquoise of the crocheted beads are a nice contrast to the wooden beads, and it gives the necklace an eye-catching detail that others will notice.

While this may look like a regular necklace, it’s a powerful teething tool for your baby. The crocheted beads are crafted using 100 percent cotton yarn, and they give your baby a softer surface to chew on when his gums are extra tender.

The wooden beads are chemical free and are safe for your baby to chew. The necklace can be washed whenever it starts getting dirty.

The different sizes and textures of beads will keep your baby interested in the necklace, and it comes in a nice wooden box to store the necklace in when you aren’t using it.

PROS

  • Wood and fabric beads offer a safe alternative for moms who are worried about plastic or silicone beads.
  • Different sized beads keep a baby’s interest.
  • The wooden necklace can take more chewing than a plastic one can.

Our Favorite Is…

My favorite of these necklaces is the Barvinok teething necklace. I like how it blends the harder wooden pieces with the crocheted beads that will feel great on a baby’s gums when they are super sore.

I love using wood products whenever possible. People have been using wood for centuries, and I always worry about using synthetic materials like rubber, plastic or silicone for teethers, in part because we use those substances so much already for our babies in nipples and pacifiers.

I recently purchased the exact Amber necklace mentioned in the article from Powell’s owls and it’s great. We put it on the LOs ankle at bedtime and he hasn’t bothered it once yet. He is 5 months and it seems to be really helping. I loved the fact that the Powell’s owls gave a certificate of authenticity and include a free moms teething necklace. It was inexpensive and had adorable packaging. Highly recommended although the potential dangers should be noted.

    • Thank you for sharing Diamond! Agreed, the dangers do need to be noted. Which is one of the reasons I like Powell’s Owls’ so much, with the screw clasp. And that’s so cool that you got a free moms teething necklace too, I’m jealous 🙂
