Baby Nail Care: Keeping Little Nails Trimmed
You are holding a two week old hand the size of a walnut, clippers in the other hand, wondering whether to cut or file. Most parents land on the same answer: a file or emery board for the first weeks, then clippers or blunt-tip scissors once the nail is firm enough to hold its shape. Timing beats technique. Trim during a deep sleep or right after a bath when nails soften, press the fingertip pad down and away from the nail so you can see the white edge, and cut straight across on fingers rather than curving into the corners.
Toes follow different rules, which is where ingrown nails start. Cut them straight, never rounded, and leave them slightly long; redness, swelling, or a toe that hurts to touch means the corner has grown into the skin, and pus or spreading warmth is a call to your pediatrician rather than a home fix. Nicks happen to careful parents too. Rinse, press with clean gauze until it stops, skip the bandage a baby can pull off and mouth. Polish is a later question, and it comes down to what is in the bottle, how well the room airs out, and the fact that everything on those fingers ends up being chewed.
